One day I looked at a piece of wood, and the grain reminded me of Lake Michigan; then I looked at the lake, and it reminded me of wood grain. So I began to paint on wood, leaving the grain exposed. The flow of the grain captured the energy of the water. Gradually I realized that I wasn't limited to the lake, that the grain could shape the path of a dancer, and I began to paint dancers on wood. Unfortunately several years later I noticed that wood darkens over time, so my swimmers were swimming at night, if at all, and the spotlight went out on my dancers. I returned to watercolor paper and acrylics.
